Construction Insurance

Cover that's built for the way construction actually works.

  • Every project is different. Every subcontractor adds a new layer of risk. And most builders find out their cover has gaps right when they need it most. We structure cover around your projects, your people, and the risks that apply to your specific type of work.

Key risks

Where construction claims come from

Most construction claims aren't caused by catastrophic events. They come from gaps nobody thought to close before work started:

  • Contract works damage: materials, plant, and partially completed structures during a build
  • Subcontractor liability gaps where another party's insurance doesn't respond as expected
  • Public liability incidents on or adjacent to site
  • Plant and equipment damage, theft, or breakdown
  • Professional indemnity for design-and-construct contractors where advice and build overlap
  • Workers compensation exposure across direct employees and working subcontractors

What a well-built programme looks like

  • Contract works (material damage during construction)
  • Public and products liability
  • Plant and equipment
  • Professional indemnity (for design-and-construct and project management roles)
  • Tools and equipment
  • Management liability

For larger projects, we also review subcontractor insurance schedules and can advise on contractual insurance obligations before work begins.

Why Maverick

Talk to a construction insurance adviser. No paperwork. No obligation.

Most construction claims happen because someone assumed another party's insurance covered a gap it didn't.

We map the gaps before a project starts, not after a claim is lodged. If something changes mid-project, call us. That's what we're here for.

Which insurance policies are mandatory for our project and which are optional but recommended?

We identify what is legally required and what is commercially expected for your projects. Typically, this includes contract works (or builders' risk), public liability, workers’ compensation and, for residential work, any applicable statutory home warranty cover, plus professional indemnity where you take on design responsibilities.

How should we structure contract works cover – per project or annual cover?

The right structure depends on the size, number and type of projects you run each year. We compare single‑project policies with annual contract works arrangements and recommend the option that gives you sufficient limits, flexibility across jobs and the best value rather than leaving gaps between projects.

What limits and deductibles do you recommend for public liability and contract works?

We look at your contract requirements, project values, site locations and principal expectations to set appropriate limits, often starting at 20 million dollars for liability on larger sites. We then balance deductibles against premium so you are not over‑exposed to small, frequent losses but still benefit from meaningful premium savings.

How are subcontractors and labour‑hire workers covered under our policies?

We clarify which parties are insured under your policies and where subcontractors need their own cover. We also help you set up documentation and contract wording so everyone understands their responsibilities and you are not unintentionally carrying uninsured liabilities for third parties.

How are design and professional services exposures covered?

If you provide or coordinate design, we arrange professional indemnity cover that responds to allegations of design error or inadequate specification. For design‑and‑construct arrangements, we make sure PI, contract works and liability policies are aligned so there is no uncertainty over which policy responds in a major loss.

What are the most common reasons construction claims are declined or reduced – and how do we avoid them?

Declines often arise from non‑compliance with policy conditions, unapproved changes in construction methods, poor site security or late notification of incidents. We work with you to put clear procedures in place, including incident reporting, documentation and communication protocols, to minimise disputes and support faster, more favourable claim outcomes.
